Caregivers need training, support and gift ideas, too.
Caregiver training now offered online and can be given as a gift too.

OREGON CITY, OR, November 15, 2008 /Oregon News Articles/ -- You're reeling from the diagnosis the doctor gave you. Your loved one has dementia - what is that? What does it mean for him (or her) - and for you?

You've come to visit your loved one after being away for a while - and something clearly is not right. Is it Alzheimer's disease? Is it something else - or just you?

You've just lost a parent, and the surviving parent seems to be totally unable to cope. You're dealing with your own sense of loss, and struggling to make sense of what's happening to your surviving parent at the same time. You need help!

You're one of an estimated 44 million family members who make up the largest caregiving group in our country - larger than all the paid caregivers in nursing homes, home health agencies and assisted living communities combined.

But for family members who are tackling the job of caregiving, it's a job that comes with no training manual.

"We know that two factors can change the experience of caregiving for family members from being a nightmare to being a loving, joyful way of living," says Sharon K. Brothers, MSW, founder of Caring for Mom.com. "Those two factors are training and support."

The Caring for Mom staff have just completed and launched a full Caregiver's Certification Course, developed in conjunction with their sister website, aQuire Training Solutions. This caregiver's course, offered fully online over the web, is designed to help the family caregiver, as well as the family-hired, in-home and assisted living caregiver assist an older or disabled person with all of the aspects of daily care.

"Families so often are doing the very best they can with little support and no training," says Brothers. "Online training courses have the advantage of being available when you need them - even if it's 2:00 in the morning."

Caregiver courses also make an excellent Christmas gift for friends or family members who have caregiving responsibilities. Gift certificates can be purchased for the full course or for individual training sections.
